Travel information
If you drive you can reach Budapest among others on the highway M1 from the direction of Wien or Bratislava, or on the main road 8 from the direction of Graz. From Budapest take highway M3 in the direction of Miskolc, drive about 100 kilometers and then leave the highway according to the signs in the direction of Debrecen, on the road 33 through Hortobágy (the famous "Puszta"). Note that on all highways you have to pay toll by prepurchasing a ticket. We recommend to buy a 9 days ticket (1300Ft).
If you fly you arrive to Budapest Airport at one of the terminals Ferihegy 2a or Ferihegy 2b. If you want to take a train from Budapest to Debrecen we recommend to take the Airport Minibus (2100Ft) from the airport to the Nyugati Pályaudvar (Western Railway Station). It is also possible to rent a car at the airport.
If you take a train from Budapest to Debrecen we recommend you to take an Intercity train. You have to buy a supplementary ticket (which includes also the seat reservation) for the IC trains (you have to buy a seat reservation even in case your original train ticket is valid for IC trains also till Debrecen).

Local transportation
Debrecen
We have only one tram line in Debrecen, a very convenient one, connecting the railway station, Civis Grand Hotel Aranybika, Hotel Termál and the University. (The tram makes a round tour, the terminal is at the railway station).
The building of the Debrecen Regional Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences is about 10 minutes walk from the Main Building of the University. It can be reached from the railway station or the center of the town by bus number 31.
The tram/bus tickets (to be punched after entering the vehicle) are valid only for one journey. It can be prepurchased (110Ft for the tram and the bus) or bought in the tram or in the bus (both costs 130Ft) (small change is needed).
It is also possible to take a taxi at the railway station. It costs at most 1000Ft to the hotel or to the university.
Budapest
From Budapest Ferihegy Airport the most convenient is to take the Airport Minibus, this is 2100 Hungarian Forints/person to any address in Budapest (including e.g. the railway stations). You may order this minibus already in the transit while waiting for your luggage.
Another possibility is to take Airport Taxi, right at the entrance of the airport building. This costs 4000-5500 forints/cab (it is the same for 1, 2, 3 or 4 persons, with or without luggage), depending only on the district where you want to go, you may see this at the map at the taxi station (Nyugati railway station is in district VI, Keleti railway station is in district VII). It is strongly suggested to confirm the price in advance.
In general, you have to be very careful with taxis in Budapest, the prices vary in a very wide range, and foreigners are sometimes cheated. The best is to call a taxi by telephone at a large company, such as Főtaxi 222-2222 or Citytaxi 211-1111.
The public transport is very convenient in Budapest, you have to prepurchase your tickets. You may buy these one by one, or a carnet of 10 or 20 tickets, or a 1 or 3-day pass, or a 2 or 3-days Budapest pass which gives you free entrance to all museums and a large discount for many other programs.
If you want to use public transport between Nyugati and Keleti railway stations, then the best is to take the two metros (changing trains at "Deák Ferenc tér").
